"Cooking Up a simpler & fairer tax system"

Breaking Tax.

A screen-writer walks into a US TV company executive’s office.

He’s had success in the past, with an unlikely duo who investigate paranormal activity and conspiracy theories.

However, he is looking for another hit and is here to pitch his new idea.

“Picture this” he begins.

as I imagine all writers start their pitches.

“A mild mannered HMRC inspector finds he has terminal cancer” he continues.

“Despite his final salary pension scheme, he really has nothing to leave his family when he goes…”

The TV boss looks unimpressed.

Our writer goes on,

Feeling he’s running out of time.

“So, he decides to start selling tax avoidance schemes”

The TV boss now looks up – “go on…” he says.

The rest writes itself

But this is not just a site about tax avoidance.

This is a site about the UK’s broken tax system.

It will consider the role that all shapes and sizes of taxpayers (or customers, if you believe HMRC) have contributed to the mess.

Whether a large international online company, a celebrity or paying for your skip in cash.

It will consider the role of policymakers… they have used carrots and sticks, so the system is politicised. There are sacred cows. Some of them are as sensible as a pair of sensible slacks. Some are arbitrary. Some are plain bonkers.

What about the role of other stakeholders? Professional bodies, the press (and those who own it) and tax campaigners?

Join us as we explore through blogs, podcasts and our forthcoming book, where we are, why we’re here and how we can improve things.

“Say my name!” to a simpler and fairer tax system.
